Fourth nesting attempt

We returned home from Santa  Fe to find  the bluebirds have constructed a fourth nest and laid two eggs.  With temperatures over 100 for 30+ consecutive days, I’d hoped they wouldn’t try another brood this year. Unless the heat breaks, I’m not optimistic about this clutch of eggs producing chicks.

Since I wasn’t here to monitor the construction of the nest and laying, I’ll have to estimate.  I checked the nest on 04 August and it had two eggs, so I’m allowing 3 days for the first egg, which means it was laid ~01 August.  I expect a small clutch due to the heat.

Daddy hasn’t been out calling for his worms in the morning; maybe he got used to catching his own breakfast while we were gone. I’m pretty sure he will get back in the habit soon. At least now that we are back Mama will have water in the back yard.  Pic is Mama on her favorite perching spot in the back yard.

Fourth brood summary:

  • Dates for nest building unknown
  • First egg laid                                       ~01 August
  • Second egg laid                                   ~03 August
